Elementary Level – After-School Enrichment Classes

DESCRIPTION

 •  This is a hands-on class where students design and build machines, buildings and other constructions using LEGO® bricks.  While exploring new concepts related to architecture, engineering, manufacturing, the environment, etc., students develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.
 •  Participants build a new project each week.
 • Once the project is completed, children use the rest of their time to expand their projects and collaborate with one another.

CURRICULUM/INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT

 • Students work in a lab-type setting using LEGO® bricks with an integrated curriculum based on math, social studies and science.
 • Instructional content includes concepts of friction, gravity and torque, scale, gears, axles and beams.
 • The material covered in each session will vary depending on students’ ages, experience, and skill level.
 • All materials will be provided.

GOALS

 • For children to play and socialize with friends while learning fundamental concepts in a noncompetitive setting.
 • To build problem-solving skills, provide an opportunity for creative expression and foster an appreciation of how things work.

BENEFITS

 • Many children already know how to build with LEGO® bricks, but with a little coaching they can learn concepts of engineering, architecture, and physics using the plastic components.
 • Students will further develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
 • Students work in a team environment.

DURATION/FREQUENCY/COST

 • The program runs through-out the school year and follows the school calendar.
 • Classes meet 1 hour per week.
 • Each class costs $20 per student, typically paid by the parent

Advanced Level – After-School Robotics Enrichment Classes

The Bricks 4 Kidz™ Robotics program turns a classroom into a robotics laboratory, using Bricks 4 Kidz™ model plans, LEGO bricks, and MINDSTORMS software. Students will build robots of varying degrees of difficulty, download pre-programmed sequences to help them begin to see the possibilities of their robot and then challenge themselves, and each other, to modify the program, using their own ideas, to make the robot perform additional maneuvers.  Students use creativity, logic and problem solving skills while learning key concepts of engineering, programming and design.

Developing programs with LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT  software is intuitive and exciting.  The Bricks 4 Kidz™ Robotics program comes with clear model plans and sample programs for each ‘bot, as well as tutorials to help the students move at their own pace.  Using drag and drop blocks from the side of the computer screen to their desktop, students will learn how each block performs a unique function including moving the motors, displaying a message, detecting a sound or measuring a distance.  By designing a series of blocks they will program their robot to do almost anything we can challenge them to and more!

Once the students have designed their own programs, they are able to download it to the NXT Intelligent Brick.  The program is sent from their laptop (provided by Bricks 4 Kidz™) to the NXT using a USB cable.  The NXT then executes the code that it receives from their computer.

DURATION/FREQUENCY/COST

 • The program runs through-out the school year and follows the school calendar.
 • Classes meet 1.5 hours per week.
 • Each class costs $30 per student, typically paid by the parent
