FAQs

What are Bricks 4 Kidz® After School Classes?

Bricks 4 Kidz® offers creative and challenging classes using LEGO® technic bricks, motors, and battery packs to create moving models.  We teach engineering concepts through play and provide a platform for imagination and innovation.

How long is a Bricks 4 Kidz® class?

Our after school classes are 60–75 minutes in length, depending on location.

How do I sign my child up for a Bricks 4 Kidz® class?

You can register your child up for any Bricks 4 Kidz® class through our website.  You may also register directly through many local community education websites, including East Grand Rapids, Forest Hills, Grand Rapids, Grandville, Hudsonville, Northview, and Rockford.

Do children keep the models they build?

All of the models we build in after school classes and camps are built from the LEGO® pieces in our Project Kits.  It is cost-prohibitive to allow kids to keep what they have built, and it is great practice to build and clean up each class period.  Each participant in our after school classes does receive a small LEGO® mini-set or mini-figure at the end of the last session to keep.

How old do children need to be to attend Bricks 4 Kidz®?

Generally speaking, our after school classes are for students in kindergarten through 5th grade.  Some robotics and coding classes may be appropriate only for older students.  Please read the description of the class prior to registration.  Each class description should provide information about the recommended age of students.

My child is younger than the recommended age given in the class description. Do you make exceptions for children who demonstrate above-average abilities?

Exceptions have been made for younger children who demonstrate the ability to build LEGO® models and/or program at the appropriate level for a class he/she is too young to attend.  If you feel your child should be considered for an advanced placement, contact Sheryl at [email protected].

How many times will Bricks 4 Kidz® come to my school each week?

Bricks 4 Kidz classes occur once per week in any given school.  We work with local school districts to make up any sessions cancelled due to illness or weather.

My children attend our school’s after-school program. Can they still participate in a Bricks 4 Kidz® after-school class?

Yes, we have many students in our classes who attend childcare after school.  When you register, please note that your child will be attending the after school program at the conclusion of the Bricks 4 Kidz class and our teacher will walk him/her to the program.

Does Bricks 4 Kidz® require their teachers to undergo background checks?

Yes.  Every Bricks 4 Kidz teacher must meet state and county guidelines in order to teach or assist at any Bricks 4 Kidz class, camp, or event.  We run background checks through iCHAT with the Michigan State Police.  Several school districts run an additional background check prior to us working with their students.

Will my child learn anything, or am I paying for them to sit in a room and play with Lego® bricks?

Children learn constantly in Bricks 4 Kidz® classes, and have fun doing it. We follow our motto of We Learn, We Build, We Play…with LEGO® bricks. Students build the model of the day with step by step instructions from our proprietary model plans. Students explore their own creativity through free play time. Our classes also provide hands-on applications of math, science, engineering, and technology concepts, as well as opportunities for kids to foster teamwork through partnering with classmates to build models, and increase their problem-solving skills by working through models, which become increasingly complex as their skill levels increase.

Do you have a store where I can buy LEGO® bricks, or where my child can come build and play?

We do not currently have a store location in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

What days do you hold classes?

We hold after school classes on weekdays, Monday through Friday.  Our days vary by school district.  We currently offer classes through the Parks & Recreation Departments of these districts: Caledonia, East Grand Rapids, Forest Hills, City of Grand Rapids, Grandville, Hudsonville, Northview, and Rockford.  We also offer classes at That STEAM Space on Plainfield NE in Grand Rapids and at a number of private and charter schools.

Bricks 4 Kidz® does not currently offer classes at my child’s school. How can he/she attend classes?

Children are able to attend Bricks 4 Kidz classes even if they don’t attend the school in which the classes are held.  If you are interested in having Bricks 4 Kidz classes offered in your child’s school, please contact the school administrator.  We are pleased to work with school administrators to bring our classes to public, private, and charter schools.

What types of groups can participate in a Bricks 4 Kidz® class or event?

We are available for all kinds of groups! In the past, we have scheduled classes for homeschool co-ops, elementary schools, pre-schools, special-needs classes, father-son and father-daughter groups, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and more. If you have a group that wants to offer a Bricks 4 Kidz® class or event, we can do it.

Does Bricks 4 Kidz® offer any discounts?

At times, we will offer specials on early bird registration for our classes and camps. These usually are for a very few days, and if you are enrolled on our mailing list, you will usually receive a special mailing letting you know of our early bird discount period. Contact us for more information about discounts offered.

Are there any fees other than class enrollment costs?

No. The only other costs associated with a Bricks 4 Kidz® class or event would be for extra optional items, such as a t-shirt. All prices given for classes and events are all-inclusive, and there are never extra fees.

My child missed a class because he/she was sick, we went out of town, etc. Do I have to pay for that class?

Bricks 4 Kidz® cannot refund a class fee for a session that has already been paid in full; if a makeup class is allowed, we will work with the parent to accommodate them in another class.

Do you have a snow day policy?

Bricks 4 Kidz is cancelled whenever school is cancelled in a district. If a school is closed for weather or any other reason, our classes in that school are cancelled for that day. That STEAM Space is in Northview school district, so if Northview is closed, any of our classes at That STEAM Space are also cancelled that day.  Every attempt will be made to make up missed classes.

Cancellation Policy: Bricks 4 Kidz is cancelled whenever school is cancelled in a district. If a school is closed for weather or any other reason, our classes in that school are cancelled for that day. Refund Policy: There are no refunds after 72 hours ahead of the scheduled class, event, or camp for which we are responsible for registration (Bricks & Minifigs and That STEAM Space).  We will refund closer than 72 hours ahead IF there is a wait list and a child can be found to replace the cancellation.  For all classes, camps, and events whose registration is handled by a community education department, we follow the host district’s cancellation policy.
