To kids, play comes as naturally as the learning. Which is why the robotics classes offered by Bricks 4 Kidz have been a huge hit with students across the country.

What are some of the benefits and what can kids expect from our WeDo Jr. Robotics and Mindstorm sessions? This quick guide will answer your questions.

What happens in WeDo Jr. Robotics?

At some point, kids start wondering what makes a machine, a computer or their favorite battery-operated car “go.” This introductory STEM skill building class can help them understand what makes technology work. It’s not “magic”; someone programmed software to tell the machine what stimulus it should be watching for and how it should respond.

At WeDo Jr. Robotics, kids ages 6-9 get to do exactly that!

First, they build a structure that uses LEGO Bricks, motion sensors, rotators and perhaps some simple machine elements, such as pulleys and gears.

Then, they use computer software to put together the code — but in this case, they use this simple, intuitive, drag-and-drop tool to build code, so they can direct their machine as to what stimulus to watch for and how to react. They don’t learn actual programming language, per se, but this class gives them a chance to see why coding and programming has become such an important role to play in modern life.

What makes the class extra engaging is they get to work with our unique Bricks 4 Kidz models that were inspired and developed by architects and engineers — professionals who are passionate about passing on the torch of STEM skills to the next generation.

Even better, this activity builds a bridge between the physical world and the virtual world of computers and programming software.

What happens at Mindstorm classes

Mindstorm classes build on the skills and experiences learners gained in their WeDo classes, and they get a chance to work on more challenging projects. Here, they use the new EV3 and LEGO Mindstorm technologies.

As with WeDo, what makes the difference is they get to work with our uniquely developed Bricks 4 Kids models. They’ll be working on challenges and projects in a collaborative, supportive environment.

Benefits of signing up your child for robotics

Want to know if a robotics class is right for your child? Here are some of the advantages and considerations before you sign up.

Low risk for mom and dad: As parents, we get it. We want the best for our kids, but purchasing a robotics kit for home use can break the bank. The last thing you want is to expend all that money only to find that it’s collecting dust on the shelf. Signing up your learner for a class gives you the best of both worlds: a chance for your child to tinker, create and use these tools, but with less financial risk for you.

Low risk for kids: Those boxes of robots look impressive, and most kids fall in love with the idea of creating their own robot. But actually putting it all together can be intimidating. That’s where a class can be extra helpful. They can assemble and problem solve with their peers, with the help of a teacher who can guide them through the process. In our classes, we always encourage creative thinking and problem solving, but they do get the coaching and support they need to make progress.

Builds STEM skills: Computers and technology are very much a part of our lives, and all signs point to a future where that will continue to expand. Gaining a familiarity with the trappings of computer programming develops and builds their skills so they can succeed in school, develop their interests and passion, and eventually, chart their own career course!

Builds soft skills: Employers not only value “hard” skills that come with training and education, they also value soft skills. These skills include collaboration, teamwork, adaptability, problem solving, critical thinking and leadership. Our robotics classes foster the perfect environment for kids to build these valuable soft skills, because kids are working together on a big project that’s both challenging and engaging.

Sign up for a Bricks 4 Kidz WeDo Jr. Robotics or Mindstorm class and let the kids get their hands on a memorable project that stretches their abilities, and helps them ladder up to new opportunities. Select your location and find a class in your community today!
