Online classes present a unique set of benefits and challenges for kids. On one hand, they allow kids to learn in a safe and comfortable environment. On the other hand, it can be tricky for them to focus with a new set of distractions and a different structure from what they are used to at a brick and mortar school.

Here are some useful tips for helping your child or children combat these distractions and stay focused when taking online classes.

Set boundaries for phone and Internet usage

When it comes to online instruction, kids will obviously need their computers and possibly even a smartphone to complete certain tasks. This can quickly lead to distractions as they might be tempted to stray to websites or apps that are not relevant to their class work.

Setting healthy limits on Internet and phone use during class time can curb some of these distractions. Consider putting temporary blocks on certain websites during class time or having your kids keep their phones in another room if they do not need them for their class work.

Set them up for success with their own desk space

Kids thrive when they have their own space. Their work space should have an ergonomic setup and a desk big enough to hold their laptop and school supplies without being cluttered.

Kids switching to entirely online instruction may be tempted to work from bed or the living room couch, but that can lead to increased distractions and create a feeling that online instruction is somehow less “real” or less important than in-person classes. That being said, changing up their work location from time to time throughout the day can keep things interesting. Just make sure tests are taken in the same location where the content they are being tested on was learned. Studies show that information is best remembered in the environment where it is learned.

If you have multiple kids, they should ideally each have their own work space even if they are taking the same online classes. Let them decorate their space and express themselves and their own individuality. This can help make learning fun and help them feel important.

Encourage socialization when possible

Online classes may be uncharted territory for your kids, but they are not alone! Joining online support groups with other parents can help you connect to more resources for online schooling and to new opportunities for your kids to communicate with kids just like them going through the same experience.

Online group chats and zoom study parties give kids an opportunity to socialize and discuss their coursework with peers and learn together.

Take breaks

It may seem counter-intuitive, but taking regular breaks is vital for the learning process, especially when it comes to online classes. Kids need a break from staring at screens for long periods of time, and outdoor activities can help break up the day while giving your kids a chance to exercise, get their blood flowing, and get some fresh air!

Stay on a schedule

In addition to taking regular breaks, staying on a consistent schedule can help kids stay focused on online school work. Make sure they are starting and finishing school at roughly the same time each day. It can be tempting for kids to want to start late and end early, but it can just as easily be tempting for them to stay on the computer late, getting ahead on work, especially if they are really into a particular lesson. We understand that learning can and should be fun, but it is best to keep online school time similar to regular school hours.

Don’t interrupt them

Sometimes well-meaning parents can get in the way of their kids’ online education. You may want to bring your child a snack or check in on them throughout the day, but you could unknowingly be distracting them from their lessons. Try not to ask them questions mid-lecture or make too much distracting noise. Vacuuming can wait until after class time is over.

Mimic in-person school as much as possible for a sense of normalcy and motivation

Our last tip for keeping kids focused during online class is mimicking the setup of in-person classes as much as possible. This might look different for different families, but could include buying new school supplies or a trendy back to school outfit to recreate traditions you would normally practice throughout the school year.

On the subject of clothes, some kids focus better when they get dressed in clothes they would normally wear to school each day rather than learning in their pajamas all day.

We hope you find these tips helpful! Remember, every kid is different and what works for some may not work for others. Be sure to keep your kids’ needs in mind and pay attention to how you can help make their education experience the best it can be!
