What are Bricks 4 Kidz Classes all about?

After-School Enrichment | Homeschool Classes | Master Brick Academy | Field Trips/Workshops

We know that moms and dads checking out our programs are growing the next generation of skyscraper architects, rocket scientists, and robotics engineers. We’re here to help you inspire and mentor them in their journey. We are passionate about fostering kids’ natural curiosity and creativity and helping channel that through an exploration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM). And we do it with a lot of LEGO bricks and building.

Each class is a new STEAM adventure as we learn about some aspect of the world around us, and then build a cool, mechanical or motorized model of it using LEGO & technic bricks, gears, axles, motors, and lots of other special pieces. Children usually work together with a partner through an instruction manual for the “build of the day” but will also have time to modify and be creative with the model, as well as build creatively at the beginning and end of each class period.

About Our After-School Enrichment Programs

Since 2013, Bricks 4 Kidz Knoxville has offered after-school enrichment at many schools in Knox County. These are typically offered 6-12 weeks a semester, once-a-week after school for about an hour. Each week We Learn about a topic related to STEM, then We Build a cool mechanical or motorized LEGO model based on the lesson, and finally We Play with the model, modify it to make something new, or just take some time to be creative.

About Our Master Brick Academy Program

Launched in 2020, Bricks 4 Kidz Knoxville’s Master Brick Academy program includes our homeschool classes, as well as other class times on-site at the Bricks 4 Kidz Creativity Center, where children have the opportunity to Learn, Build, and Play … the Bricks 4 Kidz way, unlocking cool new building skills and trying out lots of ways to build and grow that you normally wouldn’t have access to at home. Our teacher-mentors make sure that each model or activity the kids do is at an age-appropriate level intended to help challenge and grow your child, without frustrating them.

More About the Overall Bricks 4 Kidz Program

  • Bricks 4 Kids® classes offer students the opportunity to learn elements of engineering, architecture, and physics as hands-on builders of LEGO® Brick models—everything from catapults and pyramids to derby carts, buildings, and animals.
  • Age-appropriate, themed lessons introduce students to new concepts, facts, and vocabulary words, and provide context for each guided model-build.
  • Students collaborate with one another to complete their objectives, developing problem-solving and critical-thinking skills as they tackle a new project each week.
  • Once they complete their assigned building project, students are encouraged to use the rest of their class time to more fully develop or modify their models.

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT

  • Students work in a lab-type setting using LEGO® Bricks with an integrated curriculum based on math and science.
  • Instructional content for advanced builders includes concepts of friction, gravity and torque, scale, gears, axles and beams.
  • The concepts covered each session will vary depending on students’ ages, experience, and skill levels.
  • All materials will be provided.

GOALS

  • For children to play and socialize with friends while learning fundamentals of engineering and architecture in a noncompetitive setting.
  • To build problem-solving skills, provide an opportunity for creative expression, and foster an appreciation of how things work.
  • To help students understand that Architecture and Engineering are viable career choices.

BENEFITS

  • As a familiar and beloved educational toy, LEGO® Bricks enable children to grasp potentially difficult engineering, architectural, and mathematical concepts by bringing abstract ideas into an accessible, hands-on environment.
  • Students strengthen their ability to collaborate and cooperate by working with building-partners to achieve a common goal.
  • Each model build presents a different challenge, requiring students to exercise problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
