2022 Holiday Camp Guide for Parents and Kids

Four reasons your child will be excited that you signed them up for a Holiday Camp:

1. The camp is actually three amazing camps in one.

Your child will be able to participate in three totally different camp experiences during the spring break week.   Sci-Port Discovery Center, Bricks 4 Kidz and Challenge Island have all teamed up for the best spring break camp in the state.

  • Sci-Port Discovery Center will be leading exciting S.A.F.E. (Science, Affordable, Fun, Educational) science experiments and crafts upstairs in their science lab each day.  Kids will be able to participate in the experiments and have interactive exploration and immersive learning opportunities throughout the museum.  Students will even get to see some behind the scenes areas and activities in the museum that kids rarely get to see on a normal day.

  • Bricks 4 Kidz will be providing new, and some of your kid’s favorite, LEGO building activities and models in the Bricks and Bots building lab downstairs.   Kids will work with friends to build motorized, moving LEGO models like they have dreamed about.  Your kids will be inspired to build new original models through our building kits, creative play activities and art projects.  What they learn here can be used at home.

  • Challenge Island will be putting their tribe together with group challenges where kids will learn about science, the thrill of engineering and the joy of creative thinking through hands on experiences using materials you might find around your home.  No computers, no screens, no digital devices.  Just kids working in tribes using teamwork to come up with solutions to challenges using only a treasure chest full of low-tech supplies and their own imagination.

2.  The Amazing Faculty and Teachers make the difference.

Your kids will enjoy an exciting week of camp lead by teachers from Caddo and Bossier parish and by professional science staff from Sci-Port Discovery Center and more.   We will also have assistants and staff leading LEGO building activities, challenges and other S.T.E.A.M. activities throughout the week.   This is not a babysitting service, this is a camp your kids will love while they learn from teachers.

 3. The relaxed, fun and educational environment is great for kids.

Our relaxed, fun and educational environment is designed for kids to learn!  Your kid’s camp is where they can learn, explore and express their creativity.  Kids are encouraged to express their creativity and gain self confidence with the different kinds of activities throughout the day including science experiments, LEGO building sessions and fun tribe competitions.   Your kids will have so much fun, they won’t realize how much they are learning!

4.  There are no EXTRA fees or hidden cost for parents.

Your child’s camp tuition covers all art supplies, technology supplies, LEGO minifigues to take home and entry into Sci-Port Discovery Center during the camp.   The only thing your child needs to bring is a lunch or snacks and a few permission forms you will receive the week before camp.  You don’t have to worry about anything, we will take care of everything else to make sure your child has a great week and comes home thanking you for the experience.

Frequently Asked Questions About Camp

How do I register my child?

Registration is easy. You can sign up for the camp on our registration page at www.b4k.us.   You can choose if your child would like to come for one day, just the mornings or all day for the week.   Parents can pay online with a credit card or PayPal.  Phone registration is not available, but you can call us at 318-734-5346 with any questions or to help with registering.

What are the dates and time for the camp?

There are three options for camp you can choose from:

  1. Full Day of Camp is 9:00-3:30 (Week 2)
  2. Half Day of Camp is 9:00-Noon (Week 1)
  3. One day of camp is 9:00-Noon (Week 1)
How and where are kids dropped off in carpool?

Our drop off and pick up location are at the same spot each day unless noted.   Students can be dropped off for camp each day starting at 8:55 under the Space Center and Planetarium covered area near the rail road bridge.  Students will be picked up at the same location at noon for the morning camp and at 4:00 for the full day camp.   At the beginning of the day student will need to stay in their car with their adults until a staff person can check their temperature and adult contact information.  A staff person will show kids from their vehicle into the building for the start of camp.  If your child has a temperature, they will not be allowed to exit the car or attend camp.   Parents will receive a carpool tag with their child’s name for the end of the day.  If an adult does not have the carpool tag during the pick up time they must be able to show a drivers license and be on the official list of people approved for pick up.   Please do not park your vehicle and walk your child up for camp.  If you are running late for camp in the morning, please call or text and let us know and we will meet you at your car when you arrive.  If you are running late in the afternoon, please let us know.   There is a late pick up fee of $10 for campers not picked up on time.  We understand that sometimes getting your child up and to camp can be stressful.  If there is something extra we can do to make your drop off or pick up better for you or your child, please let us know.  We want to help!

My child can’t attend camp. Can we get a refund?

Yes.  When you register your child, the cost of camp includes a nonrefundable registration fee and the camp fee. If you cancel the camp by emailing [email protected] 14 days before the start of camp you will receive a 100% refund minus the nonrefundable registration fee.  If you cancel by email more than 7 days in advance you will receive a 75% refund minus the registration fee.    There are no refunds for cancellations done less than 7 days before the start of camp.   If you need to cancel your camp registration within 7 days you can change your time to another holiday camp.   If you have any questions, please let us know.

What should my child wear to camp?

Dress for mess and comfort!  Kids should wear comfortable clothes to camp for building, playing and science projects.  Kids should wear closed toe shoes and nothing that can’t be washed if an art project gets messy.   Sometimes the temperate in our areas can be cold and kids can bring a light jacket if needed.   If there are any special clothing needed we will let you know in advance.   Remember, we will be participating with art projects and science projects during the week.  Repeat after me, “dress for mess” and you will have a great time.

Does my child need to bring their own snacks or lunch?

If your child is coming to our morning only camp they should bring a peanut free snack.  If your child is coming to our full day camp they should bring a peanut free lunch and drink plus a small snack for the morning and afternoon break.  There is a soft drink machine and a snack machine available during lunch.  Most snacks in the machine are $.75-$2 and drinks are $1.50-$2.50.  The snack machine is usually working but you never know if it will be working when you need it.  Students will NOT have access to a microwave or a refrigerator.  Sometimes our campers get so excited about the activities that they skip their snacks and you might find them in their lunchbox when they get home.  If you child needs to have a snack in the morning or the afternoon, just let us know and we will encourage them to remember to enjoy their snack.   Remember that your child is responsible for cleaning up their own lunch area and themselves.  If it’s too messy to eat on your grandmother’s favorite white dinning room tablecloth, don’t send it to camp.

Does my child’s age really matter for camp?

Yes, yes, and yes.  Our camps for the week are designed for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade.  Your younger child might be a science fan and LEGO master builder at home but they might not have as much fun in our camp as their older classmates.  If your child is not currently enrolled in a K-5th grade class or if you don’t think won’t have a good time, you should NOT register them for camp.  If you have a younger sibling that would like to come to camp with their older sister or brother AND they are at least 5-6 years old AND they have been to one of our camps or classes before, please contact us before you register to discuss options.  If they are under 6 or have not been to a class with us before, they will most likely NOT have a great camp experience.   We would rather them wait until they are old enough and have a great experience.  If you are interested in a Pre-K class or camp,  please contact us for more information.

Will my child get to take home all of his LEGO creations and science equipments?

Your child will bring home a lot of fun projects and crafts from the week, but not every LEGO set, microscope or science beaker they use can be brought home.  Campers will get to make and take home a LEGO minifigure to keep at the end of camp.   As parents know, LEGO models  and the science equipment we use are very expensive and it would make the cost of camp too expensive.  We tell the kids in our classes and camps that it is like taking a piano lesson and expecting a free piano.  You don’t get to take home a Steinway & Sons piano after each lesson.

If my child has a friend at camp, can they work together?

Yes!  If your child has a special friend at camp we will make every effort to put them in the same group at camp.  Sometimes best friends work well together, and sometimes they don’t.  It will be up to the teachers discretion about placing campers in the same building group and we will do everything possible to make it work.

What happens during lunch break?

Our lunch break is approximately 45-60 minutes long.  During our lunch break we will all sit down together to eat.  After we are finished with eating, campers will clean up their area and prepare for the next activity.  During most lunch breaks students get the opportunity to work and play in a special part of the museum or to work on a new project as a group.   This is a great time for campers to chill out and get ready for the afternoon session.

Can my child bring their phone or game system with them to camp?

No.  Kids are not allowed to use electronics from home at camp.  Being at camp is about being at camp!  There are so many different things for your child to do at camp that they won’t have an opportunity to use their phone or game system while they are here. Our camps are designed to keep campers engaged, busy, and having fun making new friends. Most likely the phone or game will get damaged or lost and the camp leaders are not responsible for lost or damaged items.  Kids are encouraged to participate in our activities and experiments and not use any electronics.   Teachers will be able to take photos on occasion for students and send them to parents.   If your child needs to bring a phone to contact you for emergencies they must keep it safe and put away at all time.

Can my child be sent home early from camp due to their behavior?

Yes.  Campers are expected to show respect to all students, faculty and staff.   We will do everything we can to make your child’s time at camp the very best.  In some instances a child’s actions or behavior make it hard for them to stay at camp and they can be sent home.  In most circumstances we use the “3 strikes” policy.  The first time a camper shows behavior that is disruptive of our activities, our staff will take them aside and have a conversation about the behavior and talk about a better way to handle the situation.  The second time a camper is disruptive we will speak with them again and they might have to sit out of an activity for a short time depending on their age.  The third time there is a problem we will contact the parents to come pick up the student immediately and bring them home for the day.  If the child has another three instances after they are sent home the first time we will ask the parents to come pick up the child and keep them home for the remainder of the class or camp.  If a child strikes another student or a staff member, the child will go home immediately and may be asked not to return to camp.  There are no refunds possible when a child is sent home due to behavior.  If a child is sent home for behavior issues, they may not be able to register for another class or camp in the future.

Who can I contact with a suggestion for the next camp or event?

You can email [email protected] with any and all suggestions, concerns or kudos about camps and classes.  We appreciate all of your feedback and we use it to help us make our next activity even better.
